Guangzhou Evergrande Football Stadium, designed by Gensler, has been touted as the world’s largest soccer stadium upon its completion in 2022. News now comes in that construction on the US$1.86 billion stadium has reportedly halted as developer China Evergrande Group, which is facing one of the largest financial turmoils ever to hit a Chinese company, has ceded control to the Chinese government. Reports also say that the government would ideally prefer to resell the stadium and the land. In the event that no suitable buyers can be found, the state-owned Guangzhou City Construction Investment Group would step in and buy over the stadium.
