DZ Design creates space-efficient reception lounge in Dubai school with biophilic elements

July 24, 2020

Dubai-based DZ DESIGN, led by interior architect Dina Murali was commissioned by Fortes Education to redesign the administration area of Regent International School in the emirate. Centrally located in The Greens in the Emirates Living Community, the brief on the project was to turn the administration area into an exciting collaborative and open space that reflects the ethos of bold innovation in STEAM and value-based education.

The new design presents a fresh take on a high-usage space that is meant to give the school’s staff and students a strong sense of belonging. During the planning stage, the board of directors along with the staff were closely involved in the decision-making process by expressing their needs and preferences in terms of the actual usage of the space as well as their desired choices in furniture, material and colour palette.

“The newly fitted entrance hall, therefore, present an exemplary model of how an amenity and circulation area can be transformed into an inspiring and empowering space for students to study and relax.” – Dina Murali, founder, DZ Design

Green walls have been built into the wall which also houses the trophy cabinets with the conference room adjacent to it. The reception area is equipped with seats for parents that enable it to serve as a waiting lounge. The portable poufs and beanbags allow students to modulate the space according to their individual needs. A toilet was also added to the refurbishment with bright green walls to evoke biophilia. The school’s mission statement has been etched on to the glass surface to highlight the collective pride of the students, teaching faculty and other support staff.
