BLACKhome architects to revive the Jinwei Brewery District in Shenzhen

August 18, 2019

BLACKhome architects will redesign the original Jinwei Brewery District in Luohu of Shenzhen, as part of the Industrial Heritage Renewal Program. The original can production building in the north portal of the brewery district will be renovated to be then used as a retail and cultural building integrating art exhibition, office and event space called the Yue Art Gallery. The architects combined references to heritage and facade for the renovation project.

For the natives, the name Jinwei evokes a lot of memories, something the architects have tried to incorporate into their blueprint for this urban regeneration project. Using the fermenting tank as a reference point, the architects aim is to treat the building facade as a communication medium between people, places and heritage and give a sense of place. “From inside, people see the tank through this medium; From outside, the sun making shadows on the facade of the building,” says the firm’s spokesperson.
