Jakarta house by Somia Design Studio fuses modern and tropical styles using local materials

March 7, 2020

Located in south Jakarta, this residential project designed by Somia Design Studio was commissioned as a house where the owner and his extended family could gather during special occasions. Built on a 200m² plot, the ground floor becomes the core of the 397m² house to accommodate the visitors.

Despite the limitation of the site’s size, the design team, led by architect Widiadnyana, created a spacious house by carving out ample spaces for seating and relaxing, including a linear swimming pool on the ground floor. Full-length foldable glass doors frame the view towards the pool.

On the other side of the house, the design team placed the dry kitchen area and dining area which also features a kitchen island counter that can be used for breakfast and meal preparation. The second and third levels are the private zones housing five ensuite bedrooms. The wooden slats on the skylight on the upper level tone down the lighting and create an interesting shadow patterns. The tropical house has been built using many local materials such as Sungkai wood.
