Art fever: Bastakiya Art Fair 2009 snapshots
If you couldn’t make it to Bastakiya Art Fair (BAF), earlier known as Creek Art Fair, then there’s plenty you missed out on. The fringe event that runs parallel to Art Dubai had works shown by a number of UAE-based and regional artists. While the number may have been down since last year, the quality of works showed an amazing improvement, supplemented by a number of interactive talks by such well-known personalities as Hans Ulrich Obrist and Eames Demetrios to name a few. Topics such as “Are art fairs the new biennales”? garnered much response from the community, which is what BAF aims to achieve and nurture.
A few snapshots of what caught our eye at this year’s Bastakiya Art Fair:
I’m ashamed by Syrian artist Buthayna Ali presented by Green Art Gallery
Colleen Quigley (left); Janet Bellotto (right)
Miami-based fashion and portrait master photographer Iran Issa-Khan at XVA Gallery
Khatt Foundation Typography installation
Lomowall by the Lomography Chapter in Dubai
Nadine Kanso’s photography exhibition (Her photography is as fabulous as the jewellery and clothes she designs)
House of Memories/Women’s rooms by Nelda Gilliam. The simplicity of the pickle bottles and mobiles made of colourful little houses makes an impact immediately.
Motion in Paralysis sculptures by New Delhi-based artist Ved Gupta allude to stereotypical images of gluttonous fat-cat financiers and speaks of class and wealth disparity.
Tipping Point by Yara El-Sherbini presented by Galerie Ernst Hilger from Vienna
