Treasures of Islamic Art exhibition at Waqif Art Center, Doha

Qatar is the new Dubai we are told. If the recent art activities in its capital city Doha are any indication, then it is quite possible. After the high-profile Qatari Diar Art Symposium, the fairly new but busy Waqif Art Center has unveiled its latest exhibition titled Treasures of Islamic Art that will run till October 5, 2008.

Waqif Art Center, is Doha’s Bastakiya where even Dubai-based art gallery The Third Line opened a second gallery. The Arabic architecture of the center inspired by wind-towers, arches and central courtyards houses is an attraction in itself. The place is buzzing with activity and besides art galleries also houses coffee shops, bookshops and retail outlets that will appeal to the artsy crowd.

    There is a new Islamic museum in Sharjah - http://www.islamicmuseum.ae.
    I have not checked it out yet, but hope to go soon.
    It’s in a building that used to be a souq. There was a report about in on BBC’s Fast Track a couple of weeks ago.
