Brad Pitt’s frenzied art shopping at Art Basel and Design Miami/Basel 2009

When Brad Pitt isn’t saving the world one child at a time, he’s saving the art and design world and no, we aren’t complaining. The Hollywood star made his now annual appearance at this year’s Art Basel and Design Miami/Basel and scored a few eye-catching pieces of artworks and furniture pieces including a Neo Rauch rainbow-coloured racetrack painting Etappe at the booth of New York dealer David Zwirner, for which he shelled out close to $1 million, after deliberating for quite some time. It’s an investment after all.

The 1998 painting depicts a swirling view of a driver behind a red, Formula One-style racecar, with workers nearby carrying candy-like hoses.

The actor then moved on to the design fair snapping up a few bizarre pieces from emerging Spanish designer Nacho Carbonell’s Evolution collection and the Mini Capsule Hotel and Fossil Chaise Lounge by Atelier Van Lieshout which apparently the actor wants to install on his private beach in Santa Monica. None of the pieces looks child-friendly to us, considering the little tykes in Jolie-Pitt brood!

An AP photographer snapped the actor checking out the work “end of knowledge” (24K gold on primed linen, 2008-2009) by US artist Jim Hodges through his aviator shades.

The film star also bought a hollow white marble rococo-style table for $293,000 by Dutch designer Jeroen Verhoeven at the booth of the London-based Carpenters Workshop Gallery. The 4-foot-long Cinderella Table, from an edition of six, is hewn from a solid block of Carrara marble.

That wasn’t all. Pitt reportedly also ordered a rug made of aluminum thread from New York dealer Cristina Grajales. The Silver Sky rug, created by Colombian designer Jorge Lizarazo and woven by the Colombian-based studio Hechizoo is priced at a rate of $175 per square foot. The exact dimensions of the rug had yet to be specified. Pitt was also interested in a gold lacquer-coated Fiberglas sofa by Zaha Hadid, being sold by London-based dealer Kenny Schachter at $300,000.
