Tune in: Vivek P wins the Diesel Art Space competition at Bastakiya Art Fair
The Diesel Art Space at the Bastakiya Art Fair (BAF) gives a platform to young and emerging contemporary artists to showcase their work to a wider audience as well as salvage public spaces from the inevitable fate of commercial billboards. UAE-based artist Vivek P, who’s also behind the Cliché collective, has won this year’s inaugural competition.
Vivek’s alter ego Ubik
This is how Vivek describes his masterpiece:
“The piece is titled Tune in, which happens to be a graphical deconstructed adaptation of the famous beatles track ” Lucy in the sky with diamonds”. The concept was to tackle the controversy involved with the track’s apparent drug reference in a more subtle yet imaginative way. The song has always been a happy go lucky number. So I figured it’d be fun to dig deep and break down the lyrics of the song in blocks of colours that seem to merge and blend with each other, yet holding their own in some way, thus fuelling the viewer’s imagination. When you read the lyrics, by default, the tune plays in your head, and the colourful blocks compliment your few seconds of imagination…”

Dude - very impressive, very mod and very funky. Well done! And the tune totally does play in your head when you read it. Where are the tangerine trees though?
