IF boutique’s second anniversary celebrations at XVA Gallery

Although we couldn’t do the whole fashion week circuit from New York to Mumbai, fashion is still something we totally love and would like to think that we know our prét-e-porter from couture. In between the two, however, is the cutting-edge style that is intimidating, provocative and adored by the fashion intelligentsia. So last Friday, we headed to the übercool XVA gallery in the historic Bastakiya area to check out the new A/W 08 collection by one of Dubai’s edgiest fashion boutiques– IF, owned by Maya Shehadeh. The event coincided with the boutique’s second anniversary.

The fashion show was everything one would expect– Dubai’s air-kissing glitterati dressed in equally coveting outfits that could very well have been on the catwalk. From marvellous shoes to amazingly beautiful outfits– mostly black; models kitted out in fierce hairstyles and grungy clothes, the event was a dream for any fashionista.

Could you ever go wrong with Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto, just two of the several such labels retailed at IF which also has three outlets in Lebanon and one in New York? While it’s not uncommon to see these kind of ensembles on the streets in Manhattan, Milan or Paris, in Dubai it’s still such a novelty to see them on the streets. Partly because unlike New York, we could never dream of putting on a CDG dress, get on our bikes and pedal down Jumeirah Beach Road! Some of the other edgy brands at IF are Junya Watanabe, Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Ivan Grundhal and Johnny Farah to name just a few.

Here’re some snapshots of the event for those who dare! We are so digging the Dubai party scene…
