MUJI, the Japanese brand that literally translates to ‘no brand’ and promotes unpretentious design with its minimalist and super-practical products has announced this year’s MUJI AWARDS Competition.

Here’s what one of the biggest design influences of 21st century have to say about the competition:

Its theme this time is Found MUJI. Since it was established in Japan 28 years ago, MUJI has maintained its approach of observing and thinking about everyday life. This involves taking a view of the world, learning from the wisdom of predecessors, discovering the benefits of something that has been used for a long period of time and translating these ideas into the design of products that are consistent with our current lifestyle. Taking on this approach what can you create, when considering the life, culture
and tradition of a particular region of the world, giving it a MUJI viewpoint, while at the same time respecting its origins? MUJI is hoping to receive timeless and convincing designs from around the world.

For the coming MUJI Award 3, we want you to find Found MUJI from your viewpoint. Learn from the wisdom accumulated by our predecessors all over the world, find good points in such long-established merchandise, and convert them into a design that fits our modern life. We expect to see your “yes, of course” products that are also great in the modern age.

Anyone may apply regardless of whether they are corporate or private individuals, freelance designers, in-house corporate designers, students etc. Entries are restricted to new domestic or international designs. We are not asking for any particular genre, it could be anything from furniture, stationery and office equipment to everyday household items.
