From New York with love
Our favourite activity after each overseas jaunt (New York in this case) is to unpack the shopping bags and give ourselves a pat on the back for spotting some of the best objects of desire whether useful or useless. We scoured our favourite haunts in New York; Meatpacking District, Greenwich Village and MoMA, and dented our credit cards. Not looking forward to the bank statement later this month. Here’s a sampling of what caught our eye.
Never a truer word spoken! Aurora Lopez-Mejia’s jewellery available at Auto in the ultra cool Meatpacking district or Gansevoort Market, is full of quirky jewellery and accessories. Each piece is hand-stamped with a message meant to empower. Many of the words are from a collection of 18th-century dictionaries of the English language and are stamped using letters from an antique letterpress. This sterling silver and leather two button closure can also be customised in 18K gold.
Keep your bubbly chilled to perfection with the Manhattan champagne glass by Bodum. Made with strong borosilicate glass, it cetainly keeps its graceful appearance. This insulated glass is handmade by skilled artisans.
The design of the Teabowl by Bodum is a play with basic geometrical shapes, guided by function. Made in high-polished stainless steel and brass, the teapot is provided with a laminated wood handle and an over-sized tea strainer made easy to remove and easy to clean.
We found this cute Kulkue pattern mug by Maija Louekari for Marimekko at the Yoya shop. The three delightful figures adorning this mug are reminiscent of Eastern European bohemians and evoke a storybook illustration.
Quirky and charming, these Chat Plates by Ikuko Nakazawa at MoMA’s Japanese selection resemble conversation bubbles from Manga, or Japanese comics.
Patisserie Ring by Tadaaki Wakamatsu at MoMA’s Japanese selection uses delectable desserts as the inspiration for his jewellery design, celebrating Japanese homage to the Parisian patisserie. Wakamatsu re-interprets the scale and carefully reproduces items out of PVC and embellishes them with Swarovski crystals. The rings that look surprisingly realistic, are also adjustable.
